How are you going to promote the programs and the center?

A web site for the center has been developed. Listings on our web site and direct email to those who sign up will be the best source of promotion. Weekly articles in the local paper (similar to the sections for the senior centers) will be submitted. There will be press releases for television and radio as well as postings on their community calendars. Information will be given to the schools for publication in their newsletters, both those supported by parents and the district.

How does a student get involved with the tutoring center?

Come on down on the day and time designated for the subject. There will be a $5.00 fee charged when they arrive regardless of how long they stay (10 minutes or the whole session). We are exploring the feasibility of a membership. The membership for the tutoring center might include a set fee charged for a period of time so that the student can come as often as they wish with no money exchanging hands at the door. This will make it less expensive for the family. We will still accept walk-ins, but the fee may be higher.

Is the tutoring center as good as private tutoring?

The quality of instruction will be as good as private tutoring, but because the number of students may be greater, the amount of individualized help cannot remain on par with private tutoring. The cost is much lower though — making the extra help affordable to those for whom private tutoring is not an option.

What if my child wants to do his/her homework at the center and only ask an occasional question?

For $5.00 you have that option. Kids can come together and work together for no fee. But if they have some questions and want to get help from the tutor, one child can pay the fee and speak with the tutor and relay the information to the group.

What if 20 students show up for tutoring?

We hope to incorporate student volunteer tutors. These talented and mature students would apply for a position of assistant tutor. They must display knowledge of the subject area and compassion for their peers and their peers’ need for help.

How will I know if my child is there?

You can call and check with us if you wish. We take responsibility for students while they are at CLIC. Once they leave our space, they're on their own.

Will there be food available?

Drinks and prepackaged foods, providing a balance between healthy and nutritious offerings and traditional snack food will be available for sale.

How are you going to get businesses to "buy in" to the center?

As part of the center’s business plan, the Chambers of Commerce has been contacted. This has been followed up with a letter to all business owners in the area. Our minimum contribution of $50.00 will designate a business as a "Friend of CLIC" There are "Perks" for Friends of CLIC. We anticipate newspaper coverage will reinforce business interest. We are separating out small businesses from corporate sponsors. Our business plan accommodates businesses of all sizes.

Can you further explain the format of the panel discussions and the types of topics you would be interested in?

Panel discussions serve the purpose of promoting varying perspectives on a topic. For example, if the topic were "World War II", it would be interesting to have people on the panel who actually fought in the war as well as those who worked toward the war effort at home. Maybe people from different services of the armed forces…

If the topic were "Study Abroad" — it would be interesting for former area students to come share their experiences — we could pick an area of the world — say Africa and get the perspective of several students who have studied and traveled there.

A panel may consist of 4 people taking a few minutes each, offering their point of view on a topic. Following their presentation, questions from the audience would be answered. It is a wonderful way to gain a great deal of knowledge and perspective.

What types of seminars will be offered?

Monthly seminars could involve investment topics (including mutual funds one month, margin another month, etc.) or health and nutrition topics. Anyone from the community can submit ideas. Other seminars will be presented by businesses that are "FRIENDS of CLIC". It's part of the small business plan to help promote businesses in the area.

What educational programs and courses are you referring to?

We have brought many classes offered in other parts of the city and county to our area.  These include:  Sign Language, Self Defense for Women, Operation S.M.A.R.T., and many more.  We have many experts in our area too who are developing classes to enrich our lives.  Bridge lessons and computer instruction on a one - on - one basis are just a few.

How can I help?

First and foremost, we need donations, both monetary and service oriented, to get up and running. We need manpower to build and run the center. We need input — ideas, contacts and a positive message sent around town.

What’s at the center for Senior Citizens?

Our Senior Citizens have participated in many programs including Sign Language, Bridge Lessons and Pillowcases for Patients to name a few.  We also offer ping pong and pool and welcome our Seniors to partake in these opportunities.  We welcome intergenerational contests in these sports as a learning experience for all!  CLIC is offering one - on - one computer training - especially geared to Seniors and especially focused on email.  We will work with Seniors to broaden their understanding of email so that they may stay in touch with family and friends.  Our computers and our internet access are open to all who would like to take advantage of it.
